Rodney Anderson
Head Coach of the Townsville Beehive/Q Solutions Heat
Suburb: Mount Louisa
AKA: I have so many nicknames; Snowball, DJRod and Robney are the common ones haha.
I’m renowned for: I’ve coached the Townsville Heat in the Queensland Basketball League for eight years now (last three as Head Coach). Last year we won our first QBL Championship since 2000.
Only a local would know: Sundays eating fish and chips while watching the boats come in across from the Entertainment Centre is the best!
My most memorable holiday was: Our most recent holiday to Yeppoon over Christmas. My wife, Wendy and I have had a pretty full-on year so it was great to go away with our two kids, camp, relax, swim and enjoy some great family time.
Right now I wish I was: Still a Crocs supporter otherwise I’d love to be wetting a line in the Ross River with my dad.
My favourite day is: Game Day!
The biggest influence in my life was/is: My dad. He coached me for a lot of my junior playing days and showed me how to love the game of basketball. I still go to him for advice actually. My family all sit up in the stands behind me at home games. It’s just so good to have that unconditional support.
The funniest thing that ever happened to me was: My family like to remind me when I was a teenager and had no idea what a dipstick was in a car. I put a whole six litre bottle of oil in my little car and wondered why oil was gushing out of the engine.
Someone famous I met was: I’ve met Andrew Bogut and Patty Mills – both guys have been amazing ambassadors for basketball in Australia and have continued to stay true to who they are without letting their millions affect them.
My motto is: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.
