Where Are They Now?
Tony Murphy

Tony Murphy

Retired Newsreader

What’s your link to Townsville?

I was the Channel 10 newsreader with Jo Desmond, replacing Bruce Paige. I lived in Townsville on a boat in the marina for about five years.

Where are you now?

I’m enjoying retirement in the Gold Coast, though I’ve continued charity MC hostings along with voice-over commercials. When I was the weatherman on Good Morning Australia I travelled extensively around Australia and because I was living on a boat I sailed down to the Gold Coast and never left. Life’s pretty good here! My wife and I are off to Switzerland in June – vacations take up a lot of time these days.

How did your time in Townsville set you up for success?

I had had a long career both in Australia and overseas where I was the first Aussie to host a TV show in the US, so Townsville was a nice surprise. I remember tennis, fishing, the Cowboys and more festivals than you can poke a stick at… great times and memories.
